This course is aimed at all staff, volunteers and informal carers who are supporting adults who have a learning disability and mental health issues.

why attend?

Participants will gain a greater understanding of what constitutes ill health and wellness and how mental health issues affect most of us at some point in our lives. Participants will recognise how important their role is in supporting diagnosis, treatment, recovery and maintenance of well-being with and on behalf of the person with a learning disability.

It will look at the following:

  • Prevalence of mental health problems in the UK
  • The factors which have an impact on these numbers, particularly for people with a learning disability
  • What keeps us all well?
  • How the following conditions are diagnosed and managed:
    • Anxiety
    • Depression
    • Eating problems
    • Dementia
    • Personality disorders
    • Obsessive compulsive disorders
    • Bipolar disorder
  • The support and treatment that is available to support individuals with the above conditions
  • Who’s who in mental health services?
  • How to support someone to access services
  • Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP)
  • The pivotal role of paid and unpaid carers
  • Promoting anti-discriminatory practice and positive support
  • Discussion of the ways in which people may present and how we can respond
  • Application of theories to practice
  • Addressing challenges in the work place

CARE CERTIFICATE In particular, aims to help meet the knowledge required to meet outcomes of standards: 4, 5 & 9

FUNDAMENTAL STANDARDS (CQC) In particular, the course will enable the provider to help staff from the service demonstrate training has taken place around: Regulations 9, 12 & 13

CARE ACT 2014 GUIDANCE More specifically enables providers and their staff to understand their duties under sections 1 & 10 of the Act (and their subsections)

MENTAL CAPACITY ACT 2005 – this subject area is woven into presentation and discussion as required during course delivery.
